Frederic Salmen presented the poster „Behind the Screens: The Security & Privacy Advice Landscape of Children in Grades 5 & 6” on behalf of his co-authors Alexander Löbel, Prof. Ulrike Meyer and Prof. Ulrik Schroeder at the WiPSCE 2023 conference last week.

WiPSCE is a leading international conference in computing education, with participants from all over Europe and the Americas. This year’s conference was held at Robinson College, part of the University of Cambridge, one of the oldest and prestigious universities in the world.

The poster summarizes the approach of a broad field study to capture the current state of what children in grades 5 & 6 know about security and privacy. With data from 271 children, 154 parents, and 28 teachers, this study complements the smaller-scale interview data typically available in this field very well. The approach was well-received by the research community during the presentation.

As part of a tandem effort in the SCOUT (Sicher Online Unterwegs) project, the results of this study map out the landscape of what children know about security and privacy. In turn, this mapping will enable the creation of well-founded open educational resources (OER) to make these important topics more accessible to everyone.
